Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Mathematically expert students make sense of quantities and their relationships in trouble situations. They bring two complementary abilities to bear on problems involving quantitative relationships: the power to decontextualize-to abstract a given state of affairs and represent it symbolically and manipulate the representing symbols every bit if they have a life of their own, without necessarily attending to their referents-and the ability to contextualize, to intermission as needed during the manipulation process in order to probe into the referents for the symbols involved. Quantitative reasoning entails habits of creating a coherent representation of the trouble at hand; considering the units involved; attending to the pregnant of quantities, not merely how to compute them; and knowing and flexibly using different backdrop of operations and objects.

Use mathematical representations to support the merits that atoms, and therefore mass, are conserved during a chemic reaction. Emphasis is on using mathematical ideas to communicate the proportional relationships between masses of atoms in the reactants and the products, and the translation of these relationships to the macroscopic scale using the mole as the conversion from the atomic to the macroscopic scale. Emphasis is on assessing students' use of mathematical thinking and non on memorization and rote awarding of problem-solving techniques. Assessment does not include complex chemical reactions.
